Is this even feasible withurrent thnology? Latey in a soundard driver is nothing inomparison to latey over the net.I am quite interested in this problem bause, having worked with programmed audio delays in some depth, I am interested in a possible performae model based on using the delays of the net inomposing mus. At present this is a rough draft of an idea that I have been thinking about over the last year.Thisomes from a bkground of using delays that are multles of finger pking speeds (finger-to-finger time) in my banjo and guitar finger pking, a thnique I used on Saturday at em08, that I refer to half-jokingly as 320 millisond rounds. Part of the t ofomposition is finding finger patterns whose cents and harmonies line up in interesting ways when lined up with cents and harmonies some number N of millisonds in the past (and future) with cents and harmonies that curred then (or will be curing).Extrapolate
this to two players over the net. What I play now arrives at you in the future, and what you play now arrives at me in the future. So, what you play has to work rhythmally and harmonally with what I played in the past (whh arrives as you play), and with what I will play in the future (sie your playingomes bk to me later). Thus, the Internet ts as a big, and perhaps diffult toontrol delay line. tually, perhaps not too diffult, if wean always guarantee that pketommunation does not eeed the programmed delay; in thatase, the reivingomputeran just wait out any remaining delay after samples arrive in a stream before using them. The dynams are the same, whether you are streaming audio or simply MIDI, although ofourse MIDI is less voluminous and bandwidthonsuming.Note that no two performerslisteners will hear the same pie!!!!! I will hear my present against everyone else's past, and likewise for everyone else. This is the aspt of this model I find most interesting -- superpositionalomposition and performae. Theomposition is a superposition, ross time,
of the distit performae that eh of us hears. This is the heart of theomposition performae reseah problem that interests me, and it is related to "quantumomposition"oepts that I have ed earlier on the forum.I don't see how youan improvise over the net without making latey part of theompositional strture. I've been meaning to talk with Mo about using
eltro-musom for a little experiment along these lines. Maybe this is the opportunity. Iertainly am interested to hear about anyone who has tually tkled this problem, and the scesses and pitfalls that they have eountered. Thanks for opening this top up._________________Ordinary Mhinery . . . frightened her . . . It seemed to take up an Absurd Amount of Spe.
